Mass destruction was not a primary goal. The bombers were trying to make a statement instead that because of the west, bombings during high profile events is not an exception overseas, but the norm.

My brain is a huge troll… Just when I’m content with life, I start having multi-day massively vivid dreams (each night’s picking up from where the previous night left off) telling me that, no, there’s somethin out there I missed and here’s hypothetically how reality could have turned out.
